My partner is rereading a book about communists in the southern U.S. for his work, Hammer & Hoe, by the author of Black Marxism, Robin D. G. Kelley.
He read me a passage that begins with this sentence:
Representatives of the unemployed councils often dissuaded landlords from evicting their tenants by describing the potential devastation that could occur once an abandoned house became a free-for-all for firewood.
First, that's awesome. I love tenant action and community solidarity to keep people in their housing. Second, I'm not a scholar, so I also immediately thought of a YouTube video I watched last night: I Camped With Only Abandoned Storage Unit Items by Barely Camping.
I originally was going to use Jenga pieces for firewood because there was a bunch of gross Jenga pieces. I don't know if they're treated in certain chemicals or whatnot, so, I wasn't trying to release a lot of pollutants in the air.
That's a thoughtful take, but also, I want to see the Jenga fire! At the end of the day, what's a house, if not a careful pile of many thousands of potential Jenga pieces? There's only one way to find out.
